Boosting building renovation: EU unveils key EPBD implementation package
New measures offer vital support for Member States and align with iEPB’s mission to accelerate energy efficiency in Europe’s building sector
The European Commission has presented a comprehensive package of documents to support EU Member States in the implementation of the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). This directive, a key element of the European Green Deal, aims to guide the buildings sector toward full decarbonisation by 2050.
The implementation package includes a tools for regulating cost-optimal energy performance levels, and data transfer to the EU Building Stock Observatory, and a detailed guidance document to help interpret and apply the revised directive. Together, these tools are designed to improve building energy performance, reduce energy bills, support the roll-out of renewables, and enhance competitiveness in the construction and cleantech sectors.
The package coincides with the first meeting of the new Housing Advisory Board, which will focus on sustainable, affordable housing and reducing energy costs.
As 85% of EU buildings were built before 2000 and the majority still perform poorly in terms of energy efficiency, the directive’s measures—ranging from stricter energy standards to improved financing—are vital for achieving the EU’s 2030 target of reducing energy consumption by 11.7%.
Since iEPB focuses on improving the implementation of the EPBD across Europe, it stands to benefit directly from this package. The new guidelines and common methodologies will provide a clearer framework for Member States, align national actions, and create synergies with iEPB’s mission to ensure a more consistent and effective application of EPBD provisions across Europe.
